Kelowna residents are encouraged to turn out their lights for one hour Saturday night in support of Earth Hour 2008, a global endeavour that highlights the need for action against global warming.City staff will make sure all lights at City Hall are turned off between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 in support of this initiative. Individuals and businesses are also encouraged to sign up and show their support.
The first Earth Hour was held on March 31, 2007 in Sydney, Australia and involved 2.2 million people and 2,100 Sydney businesses. The simple act of switching off the lights reduced the city’s energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour, which is the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour.
This year individuals and cities worldwide, including Vancouver, Toronto, Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne and Tel Aviv, have signed up to switch off for Earth Hour.
